Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, and Marvin Gaye will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 9th. The class of 2016 will also include Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic as well as songwriter Chip Taylor who penned "Angel in the Morning" and Troggs' "Wild Thing." The ceremony will take place in New York.
The Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 1969, and "serves as a vital bridge between music's past and future. In the Hall, musical pioneers are enshrined and celebrated, while the organization's outreach to the music community grooms the next generation of troubadours," according to the website.
"The 2016 roster of Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees is a beautiful mosaic of the best of late 20th Century popular music. With creators of Rock & Roll, Soul/R&B, Country and Funk/Dance represented, we are looking forward to an unforgettable and extremely exciting event and evening at the Marriott Marquis on June 9th," stated Co-Chairs Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff.
Past inductees include popular artists Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Bill Withers, and a slew of others. The Hall also recognizes and has inducted many early American songwriters as well as those who penned tunes on Tin Pan Alley. For more on recent news about some of music's biggest legends, check out:
