Rock star books never go out of style, but no one has challenged or changed the tried-and-true "behind the music" format in quite some time.

    Until now…

Just like Metallica redefined and revolutionized rock 'n' roll forever, legendary guitarist Kirk Hammett raises the bar for music literature with Too Much Horror Business - The Kirk Hammett Collection. Rather than simply recount his life experiences, Hammett allows readers into his world in a way that no other artist has. Through examining his lifelong obsession with horror and showcasing his staggering collection of genre artifacts from vintage posters to Boris Karloff's suit from The Black Cat, his character, personality, and soul shine through.

This breathtaking and brilliant full-color tome begins with an introduction by Hammett. A self-professed "monster kid", he outlines the passion for all things scary that's driven him since day one even before music. The text itself then shifts to a thoughtful and heartfelt Q&A conducted by Steffan Chirazi. The two converse as old friends, and the audience gets transported center stage alongside them.

Hammett recounts using his lunch money to buy monster magazines and enjoying horror films by himself, under the flower power backdrop of the Bay Area. Speaking openly, the Q&A portion of the book proves utterly fascinating and a high watermark for the style. It actually begs to be read multiple times.

Then, there's the collection itself. You really have to see it to believe it. Hammett dissects each object's significance, and his knowledge remains unparalleled. He's truly in expert in the genre, but you don't have to be an expert to enjoy his discourse. However, if you weren't a horror fan prior, you'll end up one when you're done.

Like an archaeologist, he uncovers not only his own passion for the craft, but why fans in general possess such fervency. It's an honest look at being a fan as much as it is a dissection of horror's most poignant moments.

Like a classic record, there are numerous layers to Too Much Horror Business - The Kirk Hammett Collection, and that's what makes it so utterly rewarding. Plus, it's damn beautiful to look at. Ultimately, this is one of the best books of the year and a true game-changer.

Whether you're a Metallica fan, a horror fan, or just a reader in general, you need it.
