The lineup for this year's Governors Ball has been released, with Tool, Chance the Rapper, Lorde, & Phoenix leading the top of the bill. Also appearing at the annual festival in New York from June 2nd through June 4th 2017 are a host of newcomers, legends and legacy artists.
Flume, Wu-Tang Clan and Cage The Elephant sit near the top of the bill with Wiz Khalifa and Logic also set to get crowds eager to part with their cash when tickets go on sale, this Friday, January 6th.
The festival will represent Tool's first live New York City show in 12 years, so it seems appropriate that the headlining slot is theirs. Governors Ball organizers promise that the Tool set will feature a "full-length set with complete tour production", and will most likely contain fresh material from the the release of the band's long-awaited new album, their first LP since 2006's 10,000 Days.
Speaking in a recent interview Justin Chancellor explained that Tool was "deep into the writing process" for the band's new album. "We've narrowed things down to big groups of ideas," Said the bassist. "For the past few months we've been working on one of the newer songs fairly exclusively. We get the gist of it and find the main themes that make up the skeleton between verses and choruses. Then we explore different ways we can depart from that and come back to it and flip it upside down, and take the time to see what else is there. Everyone knows we take our time."
In 2016, Governor's Ball canceled the entirety of their Sunday shows, including a highly anticipated headlining set by Kanye West, "due to severe weather and a high likelihood of lightning in the area." West's pop-up make-up concert that night in New York City was also canceled after thousands rushed to the city's Webster Hall.
This year — weather permitting — hopes to be a stellar addition to the festival's history. For tickets, and full line up visit the official Govball.com website.
