Toothless, the project moniker of Ed Nash, is a project that the bassist of Bombay Bicycle Club has nurtured to become so much more than a side-project. His new album The Pace Of The Passing is a collection of songs that appears as a cohesive whole. This is a body of art, not a string of tracks, and themes of life, death, hope, loss and balance are explored in a humble and ambitious tone.
Nash's lyricism feels like an encyclopedic awareness of the human condition, these are songs and phrases that have taken time and maturity to develop. The world-view of this album is accomplished, and complete. It's strong stuff for an indie-bassist to suddenly emerge as an accomplished lyricist, but that's what happens on The Pace Of The Passing.
ARTISTdirect caught up with Ed Nash and asked that he share some of this musical memories, and to explore the sounds that informed his approach to craft. Here's what he said:
