The title probably says it all. However, "Lords of Summer" even in its "First Pass Version", feels like an immortal heavy metal summer anthem already.
Metallica craft a tightly woven tapestry of impenetrable riffs, thunderous drums, throbbing bass, and thrilling vocals over the course of this eight-minute-plus opus. This isn't merely a throwback to Master of Puppets or Death Magnetic. It's simply proof that the greatest metal band of all-time continue to push the envelope, break ground, and reinvent themselves. The guitars thrash and gnash in succinct off-kilter and off-time rhythms, making for a fascinating soundscape. Meanwhile, the chorus feels downright immortal as James Hetfield proclaims, "Lords of summer bring the sun". Lars Ulrich blasts out a beat like his life depends on it, while Trujillo grooves as powerfully as ever. Kirk Hammett and Hetfield unite on the stunning six-string work, and we've got another gem on our hands. This is everything Metallica fans yearn for and even more. It's also an indication that whatever lies ahead will rules.
