What a week for contrasting albums. Jeezy comes back with a new set of tunes that sound every bit as vital as previous installments in his mixtape-turned-album series, Tove Lo returns with a follow-up to her 2014 debut with a set of pop tunes that display what distinguishes her from the crowd, The Brian Jonestown Massacre share the consistently bold vision of Anton Newcombe, and Kenny Chesney calls to the heavens on one of Country music's most eagerly awaited albums of the year.

Honorable mention must be given to Pussy Riot who release a not-quite-full album of tunes, but with an expanded EP of typically confrontational tracks that surf the zeitgeist with usual spunk.

Tove Lo - Lady Wood - Island Records

Capitalizing on the pop energy that made her name familiar around the world, Tove Lo, the Swedish singer with strut returns with a follow up album that lifts her trajectory into a kind of self-aware pop that exploits the strengths and damns the weaknesses of genre. With a set of tunes like "Cool Girl" and "Influence", Tove Lo shows that she's cutting through the noise on mainstream radio at the same time spiking her lyrics with issues that stir, even if words are sometimes bleeped by the station.

Pussy Riot - XXX - Spite

Ever at the tip of the collective counter-cultural tongue, Russian punks Pussy Riot never shy away from stirring up a storm or throwing fuel into a fiery debate. With XXX, a kind of lengthy EP, they take on all the demons of Putin, sexism, media apathy, the notion of international borders, and perhaps most wonderfully - Donald Trump. The totally NSFW video included here is every bit as shocking as it is precise in capturing the spirit of the band. The graphic video is meant to "show that Trump's words are not just words," says co-founder Nadezhda Tolokonnikova - How a band does one thing is how they do all things - and Pussy Riot have pulled this off brilliantly.

Jeezy - Trap or Die 3 - Def Jam

Continuing his Trap or Die series, Jeezy offers up Volume 3. Everything that can be said of the first two mixtapes-turned-albums can be said again here - but with the addition of ‘solidity' and ‘longevity'. There's the sense that these tunes, while setting their own tone and establishing the measure of the day, carry an awareness of belonging to a larger canon of work into which Jeezy can plant a flag and stand on top of. Track "Goldmine" displays the spirit of the collection well - looped pianos, lyrics that flow with hunger, and a set of beats that demand volume beyond measure.

Kenny Chesney - Cosmic Hallelujah - Blue Chair

Kenny Chesney delayed the release of his seventeenth full length studio album, saying that "I wanted my album to be released on a human emotion rather than a social statement." And it's telling that a songwriter known for heart-on-sleeve honesty working in a genre that's known for simple straight talkin' folk arrives at a time when much of the nation needs some kind of emotional recalibration. A duet with Pink, ("Setting the World on Fire") a set of songs that sit among Chesney's best - and relief that the wait for fans is over, place Cosmic Hallelujah as one of the most welcome records released this week, this month, and perhaps for some, this year.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - 3rd World Pyramid - A Records

Anton Newcombe continues with his band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, a band that's had it's fair share of setbacks, self-sabotage, defamers, and detractors. However, something magical has been happening to Newcombe - because something about TBJM formula seems to have hit a kind of alchemy. 3rd World Pyramid, the fifteenth studio album in the career of the psych-rock band, resonates on a level like few others in the back catalog. There's an odd vitality, a wonderful sense of musicianship (check out the title track's bass phrases, or the horn arrangement on "Don't Get Lost") - and a very real presence of a vision reaching cohesion. One of the best, from one of the most polarising figures in rock.
