Type O Negative vocalist and bassist Peter Steele has died. The singer passed away due to heart failure on Wednesday night. He was just 48-years-old.
In a statement released by the band's management firm, longtime rep Mike Renault said, “Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin recording new music with bandmates Josh Silver, Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly for a follow up to 'Dead Again' released in 2007."
The official cause of death has yet to be determined, pending autopsy results. The funeral services will be private and memorial services will be announced at a future date. Band and family statements will be posted on the bands website www.typeonegative.net shortly.
Steele, who stood at 6'7" tall, was known for his booming baritone voice and his deadpan, self-depricating sense of humor. Type O Negative's blend of goth and rock, black-humored lyrics and thunderous riffs earned them the nickname "The Drab Four." Their knack for crafting melodies also earned them the illustrious accolade of being the first band on Roadrunner Records to achieve Gold-selling status with 1993's modern classic, Bloody Kisses.
While Steele is no longer with us here on Earth, we hope he is in a better place and we are certain that his musical legacy will endure.
