U2, Kurt Vile And Courtney Barneett, & Maroon 5 Blackout Top Songs Of The Week - September 1
Thu, 31 Aug 2017 16:12:09
Labor Day weekend has finally arrived, and with it a slew of new songs have hit the airwaves to celebrate the end of one season and beginning of the next. It's sad to see the summer come to a close, but with so many new high profile and high quality tracks coming out this week, we seem to be promised one of the finest musical autumns in years.
U2 dropped their first new track from their forthcoming album, Songs of Experience. Kurt Vile & Courtney Barnett delivered the debut track from their new collaborative effort. Maroon 5, meanwhile, teamed up with SZA for another scorching single.DJ Kay Slay managed to get three of the world's biggest rappers, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, and Kevin Gates on his new song. And DJDS teamed up with Khalid and Empress Of. So without further ado, here are ARTISTdirect's top songs of the week:
U2 — "The Black Out"
U2 will be dropping their second album named after a collection of William Blake poems at some point in the near future — when exactly, we still don't know. However, there is finally some light at the end of the tunnel, as this week the boys from Dublin dropped the first single from the upcoming record, Songs of Experience. What's left to say about a band that has managed to stay on top of the music world for decades? Welcome back? They just keep delivering their brand of rock and roll, and everyone (including Team ARTISTdirect) is more than happy to continue tuning in.
Kurt Vile & Courtney Barnett — "Over Everything"
When we first heard that Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett were teaming up for a collaborative album we were excited. Now, just one track in, we've damn near lost our minds. The first single, "Over Everything", from the forthcoming album, Lotta Sea Lice, finally debuted this week, and it's a stream-of-consciousness beauty. The track is a simple, straight-forward slow rocker that finds the two solo stars meeting in their middle at the perfect point between their music.
Maroon 5 — "What Lovers Do" [ft. SZA]
When one of the biggest bands in music teams up with one of the scene's brightest up-and-comers, the hope is that fireworks will be produced. That is exactly the case on Maroon 5's newest single, "What Lovers Do", featuring SZA. The only (slight) disappointment in Maroon 5 land is that the Adam Levine-led group has now dropped a number of one-off singles over the last 12 months (including "Don't Wanna Know" featuring Kendrick Lamar), but there is still little news regarding that new album. Having said that, if this is what the band is going to deliver while we wait, we are more than happy to sit tight… and dance in our seat.
DJ Kay Slay — "Cold Summer" [ft. Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, & Kevin Gates]
New York radio star/producer, DJ Kay Slay has dropped four studio albums over the course of his career, but he is turning up the volume for #5 by pairing with three of the biggest names in hip hop today. Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, and Kevin Gates appear on Slay's newest track "Cold Summer" and the trio deliver some of the finest verses of the year over cool beats with old school piano riffs. This is the kind of track that will keep those summer vibes going deep into fall.
DJDS — "Why Don't You Come On" [ft. Khalid and Empress Of]
Production duo DJ Dodger Stadium, aka DJDS, may not be the most familiar name in the music industry, but they have provided polished production for some of the biggest albums of the last few years, including Kanye West's The Life of Pablo and Khalid's American Teen. Earlier this year, DJDS released "Trees On Fire," a great track featuring Amber Mark and Marco McKinnis, and this week they teamed up with Empress Of and Khalid for "Why Don't you Come Over". Listen for this end-of-season scorcher to be played on dancefloors across the nation throughout this Labor Day weekend.
