Valentine's Day will soon be here. Whatever your feelings about this candy heart shaped holiday, we at ARTISTdirect value them. We appreciate diversity of opinion. We cherish complex, nuanced, and hard-to-define emotions when it comes to music.

Love is a big word. Maybe too big for just one day of the year. So, in honor of the holiday created to sell cards and chocolate, ARTISTdirect presents a list of love-themed songs released this past year. But make no mistake: This is no ordinary list of Valentine's appropriate songs, nor is it your grandma's sugar-coated, made-for-TV Valentine's mix. It's a long drop from the top of Mount Love, so buckle up!

Without further ado, here's a little soundtrack for whatever Valentine's Day shenanigans await you.

Song: "My Heart Went Cold," The Thermals

Feels Like: Reckoning day. Straightforward and lucid declaration of self-knowledge amidst a sea of confusion. Sounds hard-won.
Key line: "My heart went cold/This I know!"

Song: "Will You Marry Me," Sultans of String

Feels Like: A surrogate proposal. Check the title. No question mark here.
Key line: "If you shake your head, I'll understand/And become a Buddhist in the south of France."

Song: "The Promise" (When in Rome cover), Mint Julep

Feels Like: A true feeling. It might sound corny, but that's OK. Honesty is corny.
Key words: "I promise you I will."

Song: "I'm So Happy I Could Die," Skylar Gudasz

Feels Like: Sarcastic whimsy. Poker faced kissoff disguised as a crestfallen breakup dirge verging on healthy self-parody. It rocks in a no-frills, charming way.
Key line: "I'm so happy I could die right now/I'm so happy since you left me."

Song: "I Know It's Over" (Smiths cover), Jeff Buckley

Feels Like: Elegant paralysis. Bittersweet heartbreak verging on unhealthy self-pity. What you would expect when Jeff Buckley and the Smiths are uttered in the same sentence.
Key line: "Tonight is just like any other night/That's why you're on your own tonight."
