ARTISTdirect.com has partnered with Halle & the Jilt to premiere the video for "Signs," from the new album Three Roads Home, out April 16.
"For a couple married for over 40 years, my parents represent to me what is amazing about relationships: they've been through a lot and remained together," lead singer Halle Petro said. "That is my brother my mother is holding at the end of the video, on the very day they brought him home. Given the song is about moving onwards from a relationship, I liked the juxtaposition against an obvious cycle of life, a representation of what might have been."
More detail on the video, from Petro: "This footage was taken by various camera holders on my father's side of the family from 1948 to 1978 (approximately), during various family gatherings, several weddings, and Christmas. My great uncle had just transferred this old footage to DVD for the family to screen on Christmas Day 2012. I had been considering ideas for a video, and seeing all of this footage struck me as a perfect fit for the song. What you see is a family evolution, from kids to teens to wedding to kids. A 30-year cycle of life, but a very particular one, moments that are isolated but so full of emotion. Specifically my parents, in glimpses of them dating, at family gatherings, the way my father kisses my mother at their wedding, and dancing before their guests. For a couple who has been married for over 40 years, my parents represent to me what is both amazing and terrifying about relationships. They broke up before they got engaged. My father's grandmother (famously) wanted him to marry another woman. My mother had sweethearts before my dad. They met because my mother was friends with my father's sister, as she happened to walk past him shaving in the bathroom when she first visited their house. He made her laugh. They were married for seven years before they had children, and when my mom found out she was unable to conceive, she told my father if he wanted kids she would understand if he wanted to leave the marriage. He said he couldn't imagine life without her. So they adopted. And that is my brother she is holding at the end of the video, on the day they brought him home. That smile on her face, the beaming smile on her beautiful face, is a captivating story in itself."
