Take a timewarp back to the future in the clip co-helmed by singer and guitarist Bethany Cosentino.
Best Coast's multi-talented frontwoman Bethany Cosentino stepped behind the lens for the group's "Heaven Sent" video—co-directing with Lana Kim. Taken from the California dream rock pair's phenomenal California Nights album, the result is a vibrant and visceral piece that speaks to the track's robust instrumental energy, while capturing its swooning sense of soul in the vocals. If you look closely, you might notice some notable nineties nods, and that's one of the coolest parts. The clip harks back to the day and age when music videos were events evocative of a record's scope. This one was meant for a lot more than YouTube ladies and gentlemen.
Bethany exclusively told us, "When it came time to do the video, I had actually never been involved in any Best Coast videos prior until the ones off of this record. For the most part, I would be sent treatments, and I would say, ‘Okay, this is my favorite one.' For this album, I feel like I'm at a point where I'm a lot more confident, and I know more what I want things to look like. I stepped it up and said, ‘Hey, I'm going to start writing these things.'"
"They're not really treatments, because I don't know how to write a proper treatment," she admits. "I was writing down all of these thoughts and visuals and putting pictures together. We were sending that off to different directors. The director I worked on the video with, Lana Kim, is someone I've known for years and years in L.A. It was special to get to do that with her. It references the ‘Just Like Honey' music video, which is the The Jesus and Mary Chain song. It nods to the Hole video. Some of the coloring was inspired by The Cocteau Twins videos I had watched."
