It's been 15 years since anyone has heard new music from Violent Femmes, so it seems only fitting that new track "Memory" is actually an old tune. In an interview with NPR, Violent Femmes frontman Gordon Gano said, "We even recorded it as a demo many years ago...and then it was forgotten about until digging into [our] archives, which led us to record it anew and release it." It's a perfect reintroduction to that jittery, plucky sound music has so sorely missed. Don't worry, a new album, We Can Do Anything, is just around the corner, due out March 4th.
"Memory" has the classic feel of a Violent Femmes' hit, like "Blister in the Sun" or "Kiss-Off." It's jumpy, almost edgy fun, and easily worms its way through your ear into your, er, memory. Since reuniting in 2013, the band has been touring North America, Europe, and Australia, but has yet to come out with a new album. The last set of new tracks heard from the Femmes was 2000's Freak Magnet.
To go along with the upcoming album, the Violent Femmes will also be back on the road. Besides stops back in Australia, including two days in Melbourne, the band will also be playing in Auckland, New Zealand.
