Here's some background on Valora. They're the most kickass new hard rock band out there, and their debut album will be available in early 2012. Be sure to check out their latest single "I Waited For You" here for a proper introduction.
Below is the first entry of "Waiting For You…With Syd Duran of Valora" entitled "Who Am I?".
WHO AM I? — Entry #1
"Who is Syd Duran?" This is the question that stumped me in my first ever on-camera interview. This was the weirdest setup you can think of. And by weird I mean, awkward and uncomfortable. There was a pure white backdrop and a high wobbly chair that was too tall for me, so my legs just dangled there as I sat helplessly and a spotlight that made me feel as if the sun came down eye-level with me to observe my next move. I took a deep breath, swallowed the gum I had forgotten to spit out before we got started, and prepared for an easy opening question like "How's it going?", "How was the drive up here?", or even something like, "Is the spotlight too bright?" But no, no, no—he hit me with a big one. A question that I have known the answer to for as long as I can remember! So why is it that when asked face to face, "Who is Syd Duran?", I was at a loss for words? My response, however many seconds later, was "Umm...Do you want me to start from when I was born?" The room was quiet, but it was at that moment that I remembered there were about a dozen people in there listening—probably in horror.
Looking back on this terrifying experience, I realize that knowing who you are is not something you can "study for." It’s just something you know. And I most definitely do know who I am. I have for a very long time. I am Syd Duran.
I made my career choice at 5-years-old when I pointed to the person singing the national anthem at a ball game and said, "Momma, I wanna do that." There was never a moment in my 22 years of life that I switched paths. I am most inspired when I am hurt. I do not like to be hurt, although I am thankful for it. One of my favorite lyrics from my debut record is "Though I don't wish for pain, I'd do it all again." Describing one's own personality is difficult because I feel that an honest description would have to come from another person who knows you well. If I had to describe it myself, I would say that I am fairly reserved upon meeting, but I am genuine.
I feel a lot. What I mean by that is my scale of emotions is very extreme. When I am happy, everybody knows it. I want you to be just as happy as I am. And if you aren't, I may get offended. Not really, but you know what I'm getting at. When I'm feeling down, I can't just BE sad. I have to express it, namely in a new musical piece that will probably end up on my next record. There was a time when I thought I was just a freak when it came to sorting through my feelings.
One of my favorite songwriters, Lauren Christy from the production team The Matrix, explained it beautifully to me. She said that many artists react emotionally to things in an extreme way. Because we are constantly thinking of things in a creative, artistic way, it sometimes overrides our logic and ability to contain some of our happiness or sadness. So, we just let it all out! This may or may not be a true attribute belonging to creative people in general, but I know for sure it’s me. This is who I am. Do you know who you are? The next time a strange man sits you down at a wobbly chair and asks "Who is -insert name here-?" Will you know what to say?
