"Meet Valora" — Entry #8
I want to thank all of you for reading my blog every week. You have been so supportive, and I hope that you feel you've gotten to know me a little bit better after each entry. This time I wanted to get my bandmates and you, the fans involved! Here are some questions I asked everyone in Valora, followed by questions you submitted to me directly this weekend. I'm really excited about the amount of interaction we've been sharing on facebook (facebook.com/valoramusic) and Twitter (@valoramusic) lately! Let's keep it up! Thanks again for being amazing friends and fans!
-What is your favorite tv show right now, and why?
Kaz: The Walking Dead (TV Series). I had been reading the comics for years, and when I heard AMC had green-lit a TV series, words couldn't describe my excitement.
Syd: I'm in love with Sons of Anarchy (TV Series). Jax Teller is sooo dreamy.
Taelor: I would have to say, The Vampire Diaries (TV Series), because I'm a sucker for a sexy vampire...and the story line is great!
Jared: I am a huge Dexter (TV Series) Fan! You know the writers are good when they can make you fall in love with a serial killer.
-What was your last or current day job?
Kaz: When it comes down to paying the bills, I'm your number one barista at our local coffee shop. I make coffee, AND your day.
Jared: I currently work as the Campus Safety Supervisor for The Classical Academy, which is a charter school organization.
-What are 3 of your favorite bands?
Taelor: The Strokes, The Doors, The Black Keys
-Tell us about the moment you knew music was more than a hobby for you. How old were you?
Ryan: I was 6 years old when I picked up my dad's guitar. Since then I found myself always trying to learn more and more about music. From then on, I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
-What cologne/perfume do you wear?
Kenny: I've always been a Polo guy, but I'm trying out this new stuff called coffee and cigarettes.
Taelor: For now it's Vera Wang.
Ryan: I usually spritz on some Euphoria by Calvin Klein.
Syd: Burberry, The Beat.
Jared: I prefer body spray. "Axe" Kilo to be exact. It’s subtle, but still sexual.
-What's the last excellent movie you watched? Why was it excellent?
Kaz: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, because it shows my idol, Han Solo, at his finest: When Lando betrays our heroes and Darth Vader is in the dining room on Bespin, who's the only one to react? HAN SOLO. He pulls out his DL-44 illegally modified blaster and shoots at the most feared person in the galaxy. Not to mention, he's incessantly smooth with the ladies; before being frozen in carbonite and Leia professes her love, Han responds, cool as ice, "I know".
Syd: "Kaz Is A Freakin' Nerd!", because it's based on a true story.
-Which wild animal do you relate to the most? Why?
Kenny: I think I’m most like the Honey Badger. Cuz I don’t give a F#@*!
Taelor: Hmm, for some reason my very first thought was Hippopotamus! I relate myself to a hippo because they're happy, playful creatures until you mess with them...then they'll chase you DOWN.
Ryan: I would relate to....a penguin. Because I like to swim and I can't fly.
-Have you had any major surgeries?
Syd: I have no appendix!!
Kenny: Can't say that I have. It'd sure be neat to have some wings installed though.
-Any hidden/obscure talents?
Taelor: It isn't really a mystery, but I'm an excellent cook.
Ryan: I will destroy you at Chubby Bunny!
Jared: I just recently found that I am great at upholstering things. Exciting, I know.
Kaz: Nothing too outrageous, I like to be outright with my talents ;)
When will I be able to find your album in stores?
-Justine Westrich, MI
The big date is APRIL 3, 2012!! Spread the word!
Who is your favorite band/ and or musician of all time Syd?
-Amanda Lundquist, Ontario, Canada
My favorite bands include The Black Crowes, Muse, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, and The Raconteurs. My favorite musician of all time is Jack White, closely followed by the late Jeff Buckley.
Where does your inspiration come from when you are writing songs? And who is the best musician according to you?
-Celine Raijmakers, The Netherlands
My inspiration has come from movies, books, other people's lives, and situations pulled directly from my own life. Jack White is at the top of my list for musicianship.
What bands would you guys want to tour with?
-Jasen Cardenas, TX
Some of the bands we've dreamed about touring with are Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch, Tool, Muse, Rise Against, Black Tide, Evanescence, Sick Puppies, Korn, Queens of the Stone Age, and Jane's Addiction.
Where does the inspiration come from the song "I’ve Waited For You"?
-Ally Price, 17, Australia
I waited for you is about having the courage to stand up for yourself. Figure out what you really want in life, and make it happen!
What gave the idea for the name Valora?
-Jasmine Gray, 16, IL
I came across this website about female pirates. The one that stood out to me was a brave young girl named "Dorianne Valora Waverider." I researched the word "Valora" and found it to be the essence of valor, strength and empowerment. It was perfect for the messages we're sending out in our music.
Are you single?
-Brandon Von, Tampa, FL
None of us are married. :)
What was your very first show like? How are your current shows different than your earlier ones?
-Matthew Normand, 19, Charlotte, NC
I don't think a band is ever ready for their first show. We were all too excited to perform for the first time. Naturally, it was a circus on stage. We have grown musically and artistically since then.
What type of vocal exercises to you do before a concert?
-Michael Lazovich, Pennsylvania
I currently take lessons from the amazing Dave Stroud at the Dave Stroud Voacal Studio in Hollywood. I use recordings of the warm-ups from my lessons to prepare my voice before shows.
How do you deal with haters AND has a former hater ever sent you an apology for things they have said?
-Rachel Andrews, West Virginia
There are haters in every line of work, but it seems to be a huge issue in the entertainment world. As the frontperson of a band, I've learned to get thick skin. I was bullied a lot in grade school, long before I sang in a rock band. You can't let negative words define who you are. If I come across something that really jabs at me, I remind myself that I'm doing something positive with my life, and I am pleased with the person I've become.
Syd do sibling rivalries ever come up with you and Tae? What helps you to over come them?
-Yvonne Sexton, Sparks, NV
When Taelor and I get into arguments, we just gather everyone around and engage in a bare knuckle fight until one of us says "sorry." Whoever loses has to call the other "Master" for the rest of the day. OR the truth is, we're very loving and supportive of one another, and I can't even remember the last time we experienced any sibling rivalry.
