We may be through with the past, but the past isn't through with us.
HISTORY's TV show American Restoration is returning with new episodes and will begin with a one-hour special with Billy Joel Tuesday, May 28 at 10PM ET. In this ep, Billy Joel helps to restore a rare BSA 850 motorcycle, similar to the first bike he ever rode.
Want a preview taste of the ep? We have it all here for you - details, photos and clips from the show!
In the special one-hour episode, it's clear to the show's Rick Dale that Billy Joel knows motorcycles about as well as he knows pianos. The singer has a passion for classic bikes and loves to make new models look old. After trying out an old Steinway spinet in Rick's "boneyard" (and reassuring Rick that the piano is worth restoring), the crate is opened. Inside is a 1967 BSA Royal Star…or rather, a bunch of parts…including a cracked engine that happens to be irreplaceable. Can Rick and his team make the thing as good as old? We find out when he gets to visit Billy's own shop in Oyster Bay, New York for the big "reveal."
"It was the first bike I ever rode, and that particular model…It'll be like going right back to the beginning of where it all came from," Joel said about the memories the bike invokes.
Joel is a fan of the show's Rick Dale, saying, “I've seen Rick's work and he does a great job. He does it the old fashioned way, he does it by hand…it's also done with care.”
After Dale restored the bike, Joel said, "I didn't really know what to expect. In my own head I'm still picturing the old bike, it was all beat up and dingy, and needed a lot of work. I was shocked. It actually looks better than the new bike!"
