Paul Oakenfold has reached the peak of the music world by becoming the first DJ to play on Mount Everest. The 53-year-old Englishman titled the event The Highest Party on Earth and it saw him spinning from a makeshift stone stage at Everest Base Camp from an elevation of 17,600 ft.
The concert took place yesterday, April 11th, and was attended by 100 climbers from around the world. The event was recorded for a live album and filmed for a documentary, details for which have not been released at this time.
Oakenfold said in a statement, "After two years in the planning, we have just completed SoundTrek, the party at the top of the World on Mount Everest's Base Camp. Raising money for four charities in the process we have also supported the local talent and given the local community the DJ equipment supplied by Denon for the event."
The Everest event marks the first in a planned series of SoundTrek shows, which each draw attention to the effects of global warming. Each one is set to raise money for charities and some of the cash from the Base Camp concert will go to help survivors of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal.
As discussion revolving around global warming is set to reach a head over the next year, SoundTrek events will be raising money and awareness for a good cause, plus who doesn't want to dance at 17,600 feet.
