The Rolling Stones released a new animated video for "She's a Rainbow" in celebration of the 50th anniversary reissue of 1967's Their Satanic Majesties Request, on which the song originally appeared. In a July 31st announcement, ABKCO Records detailed the limited edition release, set for September 22nd of this year. The album has been remastered by 11-time grammy winner Bob Ludwig, and will be available in an unusual double vinyl, double Super Audio CD box set which includes a 20-page book of historical photography. (The double record, double SACD option allows fans to listen to either vinyl or SACD in both stereo or mono formats.) The set will also include the original 3-D album art by Michael Cooper.
At the time of its original release, Their Satanic Majesties Request received mixed reviews, often interpreted as a too quickly formulated response to The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which had been released earlier in the same year. The Stones' followed the experimental album with Beggar's Banquet in a return to the raw blues style that had launched them to fame with earlier records.
Today's kaleidoscopic video for "She's a Rainbow" features historically significant female figures interspersed with flowers, roses, and wildlife all accompanying Mick Jagger's lyrics. The song and video are both unfettered celebrations of femininity; fittingly, the video premiered first on the female focused website Jezebel.
