On Sunday night, for the first time in the 28 seasons of The Simpsons, the animated, Fox television series released an hour-long episode. The episode, title "The Great Phatsby", pays homage to both The Great Gatsby, and Baz Luhrmann's controversial, rap-tinged 2013 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic tale about wealth, power, and escaping one's past.
Jim Beanz, the music producer for Fox's Empire, provided some original music for "The Great Phatsby". The full episode is available in full via Hulu now, and fans of the show can hear what Snoop Dogg, RZA, and Common sound like delivering diss verses against a Mr. Burns' rival, the fictional mogul Jay G, in this case. Also making cameos are Beyoncé, Flavor Flav, George Clinton, and Keegan-Michael Key, who plays a washed-up rapper called Jazzy James.
News about Sunday night's episode was first released back in December, and The Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman told Entertainment Weekly, "It's a tale of greed, excess, betrayal, revenge, and ruthlessness, and there's a hilarious goose in it. The goose is really funny."
Back in November, Common released his eleventh studio album Black America Again. Snoop Dogg also released a new record this year, entitled Coolaid.
