Lee Ranaldo has just announced a new album. Returning to his former home of Mute Records, the Sonic Youth co-founder will follow up his 2013 album, Last Night on Earth, with a melodically driven, often acoustic collection called Electric Trim.
Speaking about the album in a statement to the press, Ranaldo said, "I'm so excited about this record, it represents new developments and directions for me and I can't wait to hit the road and play this music live. I'm also so pleased to partner with Mute for this release — it's like a homecoming of sorts as Sonic Youth's early records were released on Blast First/Mute. To me Mute has always been a true artist's label, concentrating first and foremost on the music."
Recorded in New York City and Barcelona, the nine tracks of Electric Trim called on the services of producer Raul "Refree" Fernandez. Ranaldo's band The Dust; Steve Shelley (formerly of Sonic Youth) guitarist Alan Licht, and bassist Tim Luntzel all worked on the album, along with friends and collaborators — Nels Cline of Kid Millions and Wilco.
Sharon Van Etten, who has been busy with her own projects — not least a special appearance on a recent episode of the new Twin Peaks reboot, appears on the album, and features on six tracks from the album including the lead single, "Circular (Right as Rain)" the video of which you can watch below. The video shows footages from the recording sessions behind the album.
Electric Trim is slated for release on September 15th this year, making summer feel just that little bit longer for fans of Sonic Youth and all those who grew into other projects.
