Foo Fighters' frontman and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl is set to make his directorial debut with Sound City, which is slated to premiere at Sundance. The film will then enjoy a theatrical run in February of next year. The movie is a doc about Sound City, the Van Nuys, California recording studio.
What made Grohl want to do this film? Well, he purchased the Neve 8028 recording console built in 1972 from the studio. Besides that, his personal connection to Sound City began in 1991 when Nirvana recorded Nevermind there.
The console is a critical piece of equipment. It is viewed as the crown jewel of analog recording equipment and has captured such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns N' Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica and more.
