A rough cut of 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine has leaked, exactly one month before the film hits theaters. The film hit the web yesterday. It is due in theaters on May 1. The version that hit the Internet was unfinished and features temporary sound and music, and a darker hue to the footage. Fox execs were in the process of assessing the financial damage, which could number in the millions, and the fallout from the leak. Rumors had spread the there was also a fake Wolverine file loaded with viruses that would infect any user who opened it. The rumor acted as a deterrent for viewing the film/files.
The studio has stated that it will aggressively pursue the source of the leak with assistance from the MPAA, the FBI, and local law enforcement. The studio admitted to "forensically marking content" so that leaks can be traced. Fanboy-leaning websites like Ain't It Cool News promised not to post comments or reviews from anyone who watched the film in a show of support for the studio and film and their stance against piracy. Films often leak on the web, but these leaks usually occur on the same day the film hits theaters due to camcorders inside a theater. A leak of this magnitude and this far in advance has not occurred in quite some time. In a statement issued yesterday, Fox said, "We are encouraged by the support of fan sites condemning this illegal posting and pointing out that such theft undermines the filmmakers and actors, and above all, hurts fans of the film." It has not been revealed if the leak occurred through a Fox employee or a third-party.
The film explores the origins of the Wolverine character, portrayed by Hugh Jackman. It is one of the most anticipated releases of the 2009 summer season.
