The west coast needed a new hero. It got something better though. It got Compton's very own YG.
On his long-awaited full-length major label debut, My Krazy Life, the 24-year-old MC takes us down familiar streets in a new ride. At the same time, it's a different perspective on the "thug life" in South Central from Tupac and all of the nineties luminaries. YG's hilarious at times. Take "Me & My Bitch" featuring Tory Lanez or the standout "Who Do You Love?" where he and Drake get wild together. The song's have a clever cinematic panache that's more Friday than Boyz 'N the Hood, and that's downright refreshing in this day and age when everybody is just so serious. ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock also join him for the raucous "I Just Wanna Party", while "BPT" opens the gateway into his world with all of the grit intact. He can flow fast or he can ease back, that's one of the biggest charms YG has in his arsenal—diversity and dynamics many of his counterpoints can't cop to. Everything comes to a head on the powerful finale "Sorry Momma" complete with a hook from L.A.'s own Ty Dolla $ign. That's where he really puts it down lyrically with something of a confession.
The west coast's new king has officially arrived...and his Krazy Life is worth living with him.
