Young Thug has got a landmark project on his hands with Barter 6. He just dropped it yesterday, and it encapsulates the enigmatic, entrancing, and engaging sound that the Atlanta artist pioneered, merging hip-hop rhythms, warbling otherworldly vibes, impossible-to-shake hooks, and masterful delivery into a downright revolutionary 13-track set. This shouldn’t surprise anybody. Lest we forgot Thug served alongside Rich Homie Quan as one half of Rich Gang’s 2014 mixtape, Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1, which remains one of the best hip-hop projects of the past decade. He also gave a distinct energy and refrain to Rich Gang’s platinum smash “Lifestyle.” So, now the world gets to see an entire project that’s been much buzzed-about driven completely by Thugger, and he delivers a hundred-fold.
The airy “Constantly Hating” pairs him Birdman together for a woozy and wild opener that gets fierce on the refrain, fusing a futuristic alternative take with a powerful melodies. Birdman’s presence adds a certain old school power with a decidedly modern spark. His golden seal always points to greatness, and he’s right behind Thug. The whole south, literally, rises on “Can’t Tell” where Thugger, Boosie Badazz, and T.I. all go downright hard. “Check” feels simply massive as does “With That.”
However, the stand out remains “Amazing.” Atlanta’s next R&B icon Jacquees carries a mega-smooth chorus with a legendary swagger. He’s got his own sound and style, and this reunites him with Thug after Rich Gang’s “Soldier.” Jacquees has got an extremely bright future himself, and this is yet another indication of his trajectory towards the top. It combines 2015’s stars into one shining and shimmering anthem. It’s “Knocked Off” with Birdman though that hits the hardest. There’s nothing like it when these two ignite a beat.
