Zach Galifiankis and director Todd Phillips deliver more massive laughs with Due Date.
As their first project since The Hangover, Due Date hits all the right comedic notes with Galifiankis as an aspiring actor named Ethan Tremblay on a cross-country trip with Robert Downey, Jr.'s Peter Highman.
Now, Peter had no intentions of trekking across the country with the bulldog-carrying, Lilith Fair-shirt sporting Ethan, but after both of them end up on a "no-fly" list, there's no other alternative. They experience the ins and outs of America's strangest locales from rest stops to Western Union with all kinds of nuttiness transpiring around each bend. Galifianakis imbues Ethan with a natural sensitivity that makes him even funnier and ultimately more tangible, while Phillips once again architects masterful madness for the characters. They're the ultimate comedy team...
Due Date star Zach Galifianakis and director Todd Phillips sat down with ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino for an exclusive interview about what makes Due Date so hilarious, the best road trip songs, their playlists that Lilith Fair shirt and some of Zach's "favorite" head shots.
Check out the interview below and don't miss Due Date when it hits theaters on Friday November 5, 2010!
Given Ethan's show biz aspirations, was the film especially personal for the both of you?
Zach Galifianakis: I think if you come out to California trying to be an actor, it's pretty hard. There's desperation. A lot of people are desperate, and a lot of people are clueless, including me—Zach [Laughs]. It's hard to try to figure it out. I've never told you, but I have head shots that if you saw them…they're so terrible! It's so embarrassing.
Todd Phillips: That's funny. I've got to see those.
Zach Galifianakis: They're terrible [Laughs].
Todd Phillips: There's this idea that Ethan has in the movie that's a little extreme. It's that idea that the streets are paved with gold and it's easier than he thinks. However, I think it's something that adds to the tragedy that his character goes through in the film.
Where did Ethan's Lilith Fair t-shirt come from?
Todd Phillips: Finally, somebody noticed [Laughs].
Zach Galifianakis: To be honest with you, I've been trying to get a Lilith Fair t-shirt into some role. I don't know why. It's been a personal challenge.
Todd Phillips: Oddly, this is the most perfect one for it…
Zach Galifianakis: It's perfect that he went to Lilith Fair by himself—not surrounded by a group of women.
Todd Phillips: And he didn't go to meet women…
Zach Galifianakis: No, he definitely didn't go to meet women.
Todd Phillips: He definitely wanted to check out Alanis Morisette's second set.
Zach Galifianakis: I would too. He's kind of a Lilith Fair guy.
Sarah McLachlan brings him to tears.
Zach Galifianakis: Sarah McLachlan, yes!
