Thu, 07 Sep 2017 15:22:39
The extended Labor Day weekend seems to have energized a variety of artists across the landscape. Sure it was a short week for us working folk, which is always exciting, but it seems like musicians were working harder than ever to deliver visual spectacles via music videos.
Zayn finally released his collaboration with SIA, and added to the already super-powered track by working with producer Greg Kurstin, and picking Marc Webb to direct the video. Sky Ferreira debuted a clip for her track from Baby Driver.
Lil Uzi Vert's "XO Tour Llif3" finally received the video it has long deserved. Kelly Clarkson announced a new album, and with it dropped a colorful clip that is sure to grab viewers' and listeners' attention. And that was only the beginning for a week filled with stunning eye candy, so without further ado, here are ARTISTdirect's top music videos of the week:
Zayn — "Dusk Till Dawn" [ft. SIA]
Former One Direction member Zayn Malik has been hard at work on his follow up to Mind of Mine, his 2016 debut solo album. Featuring SIA and co-written and produced by Greg Kurstin, this is a star-studded affair that starts slow and brooding before an explosive cinematic ending. The video for the track was directed by Marc Webb, known for his work directing The Amazing Spider-Man and 500 Days of Summer. Mind of Mine debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and with songs like "Dusk Till Dawn", we won't be surprised if Zayn makes it two in a row.
Sky Ferreira — "Easy"
Sky Ferreira made a quick cameo in Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, and also contributed a cover of Commodores' "Easy" to the soundtrack. This is the Ferreira's first song as the leading artist that we've heard since she dropped her debut album, Night Time, My Time back in 2013. She's been working on a follow up for some time now, and we're happy to hear the new music pan out. The video features cuts between Ferreira's singing and a particularly heartstrung scene from the summer action smash.
Lil Uzi Vert — "XO Tour Llif3"
"XO Tour Llif3" has been one of the biggest songs of the summer and helped Lil Uzi Vert's debut studio album, Luv is Rage 2, reach the top of the Billboard chart. Now the hit track finally has a video to match with over seven million views, directed by fashion designer Virgil Abloh and complete with Arabic subtitles that turn out to be gibberish, zombie girls, and an appearance from The Weeknd.
Kelly Clarkson — "Love So Soft"
Kelly Clarkson announced her new album, Meaning of Life, this week and with it delivered her newest single "Love So Soft", along with its music video. The David Meyers-directed clip features colorful dance numbers in the vein of classic Hollywood. Locations seem to span the globe, from Southern fields to the New York skyline to a mesmerizing modern house on the edge of a cliff. The harlequin clip is engrossing and sure to shoot Clarkson back near the top of the charts where she belongs.
Beck — "Up All Night"
Beck recently announced his follow up to 2014's Morning Phase, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Colors is due out October 13th, and this week he dropped a new single "Up All Night". Directed by Canada, the clip features a superhero teenager overcoming bizarre obstacles as she saves her passed-out friend from a particularly lit party. We're wishing our high school parties had been this wild, and even more that Solene Rigot had been there to save us.
