"Don't know when I'm wake or when I'm dreaming," croons ZZ Ward on "Better Off Dead" from her Eleven Roses mixtape. While listening to her, neither will you…
Her soulfully smoky intonation is simultaneously haunting and hypnotic especially as she glides over a sample of Tyler, the Creator's "Yonkers". It's nothing short of a dream, and this 21st century siren is a refreshing, raw, and real femme fatale of the highest order.
There hasn't been a female singer this elegantly exposed since Fiona Apple ripped pop a new one with Tidal. There's a noir-ish bounce to "Got It Bad" that wouldn't be out of place during a scene from Blue Velvet or Lost Highway, while "Morphine" seeps in psychologically as Miss Ward shares another dark tale from the bottom. She guides everything with a poetically poignant lyrical sensibility and harrowingly heavenly hooks. The acoustic numbers "Last Love Song" and "Til' The Casket Drops" really show the power inherent in her voice.
Like all great artists, Ward thrives on extremes. She can be gritty or gorgeous. She can be brutal or beautiful. However, at the end of the day, she's simply ZZ Ward, and she's got the power to flip pop music upside down. Shit's not going to be the same once she drops her Hollywood Records debut, and we get the impression she wouldn't have it any other way…
