Borut Krzisnik Biography
Intensity, diversity and exciting changes are the main characteristics of his music. The key moment in his musical stories is not only emphasising the contrasts but rather bridging them over. His relationship to musical ideas is similar to that of a director to an actor: he builds the composition by confronting different
characters, makes them deal with various situations and so
he tries to draw out of them their true nature. Crashing the differences till they burn or dance together. Tonality or atonality, a fixed score or improvisation, luddism or academic, a strict definition of genre, or something that defies genre classification, the selection in advance of instruments or musicians, or an ad hoc ensemble - these are the extremes between which the composer moves easily. Liberated from the narrow confines of a specific methodology, he is able to stress the diverse aspects of his music. Using a polyglot musical language the composer draws a common thread through all these contrasts and introduces them to us with inspiring optimism.
Borut Krzisnik was born in Zagreb in 1961. The child of a diplomatic family, he moved frequently, both in former Yugoslavia and abroad, before finally settling in Ljubljana. His experiences of different nations and mentalities helped to form his understanding of difference, something which certainly contributes to his broad approach to music. He graduated in psychology from the University of Ljubljana, but soon afterwards devoted himself to music.
