sodastream (official) Biography

Sodastream formed in Perth, Western Australia at the
beginning of 1997 and played there consistently before
moving to Melbourne at the end of 1998. Their first EP
"Enjoy" received airplay from BBC DJ John Peel
resulting in the track "Turnstyle" featuring in his Festive
50 for 1998. Peel also played Karl's solo 7" "The Sky is
Beginning to Bruise" and it was later released in
Europe by Bad Jazz Records.

Sodastream's second EP "Practical Footwear" was
recorded in August '98 after the departure of their
drummer and took a more acoustic slant. Shortly after
its Australian release the guitar and double bass duo
made their first trip to Europe and played shows in
Holland and the UK. While in London Sodastream met
the folk from Tugboat Records and in September 1999
they released Practical Footwear throughout Europe.
The EP immediately received "Single of the Week" in
Melody Maker as selected by Moby, and was soon after
licenced to Drive-In Records for release in the US
where it charted on a number of college radio stations.

Sodastream's debut album 'Looks Like a Russian' was
recorded over the Australian summer of 99/2000 in
Melbourne and featured a number of guest musicians.
It expanded on the acoustic instrumentation and simple
production used on Practical Footwear while retaining
the sparse simplicity which has become a
characteristic part of Sodastream's sound. The album
was released by Tugboat Records throughout Europe
in June 2000 and later that year Sodastream returned
to the continent for the third time and completed their
most extensive tour of the territory yet. It included shows
in France, Luxembourg, Germany, Holland (second
appearance at the Crossing Border Festival) and the
United Kingdom. Highlights of the tour included
supporting Low at the Union Chapel in London, and the
recording of a long awaited Peel Session at the BBC.

In February 2001 Sodastream recorded 11 tracks for
their follow up album to 'Looks Like a Russian'. Once
again, Sodastream invited a number of guest
musicians to contribute additional instrumentation to
many of the songs. 'The Hill For Company' was
released by Tugboat Records (UK/Europe) in
September and has also been licenced to the following
labels: Trifekta (Australia), Festival (New Zealand),
Everlasting (Spain) and P-Vine (Japan).

Sodastream played shows in Italy, Spain, Germany,
Belgium, Holland and Paris in October/November 2001
and also released a 4 track EP - 'In Between Times' -
through Spanish label Acuarela Records at that time.

Tour plans for 2002 at the moment include UK/Europe
in Spring, an extensive tour of Spain/ Portugal and
hopefully some dates in the US later in the year.
