Orange and Lemons

Orange and Lemons Biography

Orange and Lemons is an indie-pop rock band based in Manila, Philippines. The evolution of Orange and Lemons begins with the story of a band called The Cranes.
Clem Castro (b. December 10, 1976, guitars/vocals) and Mcoy Fundales (b. November 3, 1977, guitars/vocals) hail from the same provincial town of Baliuag, Bulacan. They met in the early 90’s during their first weeks as high school students in a public school and quickly became friends sharing the same interest in music. Mcoy introduce to Clem the music of The Beatles and they spent their high school days admiring, listening and copying Beatles songs.
Upon entering college, Clem and Mcoy started writing songs and later formed The Cranes with four other members they met in Bulacan. They started out as a cover band playing popular new wave songs but eventually recorded six original songs which were later discarded after The Cranes broke up.
During his last years in college, Clem discovered the music of Morissey & the Smiths and was fascinated and absorbed by it. Then in 1999, Clem and Mcoy formed Orange and Lemons together with Ato Santiago (bass) and Mike Salvador (drums), with a more guitar oriented approach, highly indebted to the British indie-pop scene and evidently inspired by The Beatles, The Smiths, The Cure and The Wild Swans.
In January 2000, they recorded 2 singles, “She’s Leaving Home” and “Isang Gabi” and were later released in December 2002, in an indie compilation album No Seat Affair! Vol. 2. The song “She’s Leaving Home” enjoyed airplay in a local rock station (NU107.5) supporting indie bands and generated good word-of-mouth within the industry. The band earned a small following and began to make inroads in Manila and nearby provinces. Despite their promising career in the music industry, Ato and Mike decided to quit the band due to inevitable reasons.
Clem and Mcoy continued, recruiting first Ace Del Mundo (b. January 25, 1977), who was very keen on being part of the band that he moved from guitar to drums. Ace later brought in his younger brother JM Del Mundo (b. February 4, 1978) to take post as their bassist.
In August 2003, Orange and Lemons had signed with Terno Recordings, an indie-label spearheaded by Groovenation’s top dog, Toti Dalmacion. Their debut album entitled “Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes and Dirty Ice Cream” is already in the works.
