CARUS Biography
www.carus.com.au
Ever come back from travelling to find yourself just travelling some more? That’s a just how things seem to be going for Freemantle-born 26 year-old singer-songwriter Carus Thompson.
From the time when he began writing and performing his own songs at the age of twelve-having now penned over 300 tunes- Carus has lived in Perth, the aboriginal community of Peppimenarti, Darwin, and Melbourne all-the-while criss-crossing the country like an annual migration.
Since the age of 18 Carus has made his living from music, playing upwards of four nights a week in the Perth pub circuit, quickly building a name teaming up with acts like Mick Thomas, Ed Kuepper, Tiddas and Neil Murray. From the four years growing up in the Aboriginal community of Peppimenarti Carus formed a bond with the region and frequently toured the North-West and Top End. At the Kimberley Moon Rise Rock festival in 2003, apart from delivering his own highly anticipated set, Carus was running music and songwriting workshops for aboriginal children of the local surrounding communities as well as jamming with other performers on stage throughout the weekend. An experience that was later put into song on the track 'Moonrise' (Song's From Martin St - CAR004, 2003) and which also features a blistering solo from John Butler.
In 2002 Carus headed east to where he now resides, Melbourne. On the back of two EP’s he continued with extensive national touring with the likes of Jack Johnson, The John Butler Trio and The Waifs plus his own headlining tours. Carus then began recording his debut album, "Song's From Martin St" named after the street in which the Melbourne recording studio is located.
Produced by JJJ’s Chris Thompson featuring a staggering array of guest performances by John Butler, Vicki Simpson (the Waifs), David Lane, Charlie Owen (Cruel Sea), Nicky Bomba, Adam Gare (Uncle Bill) and Dave Johnson, “Songs From Martin St” was released independently through MGM distribution in March 2003 (CAR004) debuting at number 18 on the AIR (Association of Independent Record Labels) chart. A follow up to Carus' well-received "Mind's Eye" EP (over 1500 copies sold), the album is all that you love about folk, rock, funk, reggae and groove put together with stripped-back ballads, back-beat jams, toe-tapping ditties and "makes no pretension except to write charming songs that bear repeated listens." (JUICE Magazine)
After an all-out national tour earlier this year and playing for all the hipsters and hippies at the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival, The Frankston International Guitar Festival and The Fairbridge Music Festival Carus got his frequent flyer number and headed overseas for a 20 date tour performing through France, Germany, Switzerland and the UK. The shows included appearing at the Edinburgh Festival, packing out the 12 Bar Club playing a double-bill with Mick Hart and opening for the Waifs to an audience of 1000 in London.
In France, Sorte Magazine writes:
"Carus has got the look of someone who has already seen so much for someone his age… Carus puts his life, into music, with fabulous harmonies and melodies, heartfelt feelings... A rare artist that you must discover."
As a songwriter, Carus’ focus lies in the endeavour to achieve what’s best for each song, priding himself on the dynamics of a live set. "He should be the next Paul Kelly" says Phil Stevens, manager of The John Butler Trio, The Waifs, Little Birdy & Independent label Jarrah Records. An experienced performer, he plays solo and with his band, switching between acoustic and electric guitars. In his live shows, taking in the vibe of each venue and audience, Carus melds reggae, country, folk, rock, funk and groove and builds a connection with every audience. As he’s selling-out shows in Perth and drawing loyal crowds in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney Carus still enjoys the gentler pace outside the hustle and bustle, packing-out shows in regional areas and costal towns.
A long time building, the swell around Carus and his music is ready to break. Straight off the plane from Europe Carus will tour Australia extensively, release a double-disc live acoustic album, play for the Surfers 44 and return to Europe all in less than a few months.
With a passport that now looks like a lost package shuffled from one post-office to the next, covered in stamps from around the globe, Carus is an independent act making people listen up, take notice and come back for more.
