Ne-Yo Gets No-No From Girls School
Oh Mercy, all those buckled seat belts for nothing! The students at Detroit's Mercy High School, an all-girls Catholic school, were elated when they won a contest sponsored by a local radio station promoting seat belt usage. The big prize: an in-school concert from chart-topping R&B crooner Ne-Yo."Everyone was excited," sophomore Siobahn Jones told the press. "Everybody was singing his songs in the hallway."
Perhaps wondering how the singer worked these teenagers into such a tizzy, school administrators decided it was in their best interests to review Ne-Yo's debut CD, In My Own Words. After an Internet search for lyrics, a scandalized principal pulled the plug on the show.
Everyone knows that Ne-Yo is "So Sick" of love songs, which seems harmless enough. So what else is on his mind? "Just one touch and I erupt like a volcano and cover her with my love," he sings on one tune ("Sexy Love"). Another song, the appropriately titled "Mirror," is wholly devoted to the joys of getting freaky in front of a mirror.
"The bottom line is I have to make decisions based on what I think is going to be in line with what we are, what we teach, and how we've worked with students," said principal Carolyn Witte, explaining her veto.
Adding salt to the wounds for the Mercy girls, the Ne-Yo in-school concert may still take place -- but at the school that was the runner-up in the competition.
