Does Your Baby Love Disco?

Disco isn't just for the nostalgic anymore. A successful club event in Philly called Baby Loves Disco is expanding like wildfire across the U.S., with dates in major cities like LA, San Francisco and New York, and, what's more, even the suburbs are getting hip (first on deck: Aurora, IL, home of Wayne's World).

So what makes Baby Loves Disco different from any other disco-themed club? As the name implies, this one is aimed at actual babies -- as well as toddlers, young children, and their adult supervisors. "We're parents, we're always looking for something new and different to do with the kids that is at least tolerable to us parents," says club founder Heather Murphy.

Baby Loves Disco is an afternoon dance party featuring classic disco tunes from the '70s and '80s, spun and mixed by real DJs, guaranteed to get those little booties moving and grooving. Baby Loves Disco takes babes in clubland to a whole new level. The fun spills out from all corners of the club: bubble machines, baskets of instruments, a chill-out room (with tents, books and puzzles), diaper changing stations, a full spread of healthy snacks (provided by Whole Foods) and dancing -- lots of dancing. But at its core, Baby Loves Disco is a community event that brings kids together with kids and parents together with parents.

"My kids had a blast, but the real bonus was that my wife and I had a great time too," said Andy Hurwitz, who helped bring the club to New York. "It's more than just something to do for the kids, Baby Loves Disco is fun for parents. We get the chance to mingle with other parents, dance with our kids and have a Saturday afternoon cocktail to boot."

The Baby Loves Disco website -- www.babylovesdisco.com -- contains the upcoming schedule, as well as a series of photographs from past disco nights; an especially entertaining one features a line of strollers parked like Harleys outside a club. Parents and their boogying babies -- and "baby" is used loosely, as clubgoers range in age from a few weeks to 10 years old and up -- are advised to get their tickets early, as some nights have been selling out.
