Originally formed in 1980, the Adolescents stand alongside Social Distortion and Agent Orange as one of the bands that created the blueprint for Southern California's Orange County punk scene. After a hiatus of more than 15 years, three of the band's original members decided to reform the Adolescents, and returned to the studio to record OC Confidential, their first album of new material since 1988's Balboa Fun*Zone.
The new incarnation of the Adolescents features founding members Tony Cadena (a.k.a. Tony Reflex) on vocals, Frank Agnew on guitar, and Steve Soto on bass, plus 18-year-old Frank Agnew, Jr. on guitar and Derek O'Brien of Social D on drums. They'll be bringing their Monsanto Hayride tour to a city near you this summer.
We convinced Steve Soto to do more than just give us an interview...we convinced him to play "If You're Forced To."
AD: No one likes to answer these questions, but if you were forced to...
...describe the new album in three words or less?
SS: "Hard, melodic, thoughtful."
...admit to a really terrible record you owned as a kid?
"Rush, 2112."
...get a really cliched punk rock fashion accessory?
"Safety pin in the face."
...cover a Bon Jovi song, which one?
"'Dead or Alive.'"
...hit a Wendy's drive-thru, what would you order?
"Chili without the finger in it."
...play a command performance for the Bush White House, what song would you open with?
"'Hawks and Doves.'"
...play only one venue ever again?
"House of Blues Anaheim."
...put a cover song on your next album, what would you play?
"'Masters of War,' Bob Dylan."
...pick a dream band to share a bill with (past or present)?
"The Clash (we got to play with the Ramones)."
...relive the Reagan administration, what would you do?
"Same thing we did the first time... agitate."
