Punk trio begins work on much-anticipated American Idiot followup.
Green Day Head Back to the Studio
At the beginning of summer, Green Day promised fans that their next album, the follow-up to the massively successful American Idiot, would be "an event." Then they went on summer vacation. But the boys are back in town -- and back in the studio, where work has begun on what will surely be one of the most hotly anticipated releases of...um, whatever year they get around to releasing it in."Billie, Mike and Tre are back from summer vacations working hard on new material for the next Green Day album," reads an economical post on the band's website. An "exclusive scoop" is promised next week, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, a spokesperson for Reprise Records told MTV that the band has not yet settled on a producer or a targeted release date. Green Day was believed to have begun recording demos for the album in June, but what self-respecting mascared punk can resist the call of the summer sun?
The multi-platinum trio isn't leaving American Idiot behind entirely, as a movie based on the album is still in the works. They also continue to influence the youngsters; former tourmates My Chemical Romance enlisted longtime Green Day producer Rob Cavallo to work on their forthcoming concept album.
And good news for aspiring Billie Joes: you can now look the part by picking up one of the singer's signature Les Paul guitars, newly available from Gibson.
