Exclusive Interview: NEW FOUND GLORY has answered your questions!
With three Gold albums under their belt already, the alt-rockers from Coral Springs, Florida are poised to take it to the next level with their fifth studio album, Coming Home.New Found Glory’s rabid fan base fired some probing questions at them in our “Ask the Artist” feature. Drummer Cyrus Bolooki and guitarist Steve Klein were kind enough to answer hard hitting questions about birthdays on tour and... cheese. Check it out!
Christine from Providence, RI asked:
You guys seem to tour non-stop. Do any of you ever get sick of the road? What kinds of things give you comfort while you are traveling?
NFG: “Being on the road is so much fun -- traveling to different cities every night, meeting tons of amazing fans, playing shows to thousands -- but it can definitely get to you after awhile. I think it just makes people kinda grumpy, but we always get through it...I mean, think about what we're doing while we're on tour...it's so amazing that we're able to do this as a job! While traveling, we all spend time with video games and DVD's on the bus, computers, internet, and myspace, iPods, Sidekicks...pretty much what most people do when they spend lots of time traveling. Other than that, I try to pack a nice blanket and pillow so that I sleep well at night.”
Kim from Detroit asked:
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
NFG: “I always stretch. It's real important for me to do that, because I've definitely hurt myself by not stretching in the past. I usually just try to take a little bit to relax and focus on playing the show...that, and it's always right before you have to take the stage that your body tells you that you need to use the restroom...”
Greg from Apple Valley, MN asked:
I know Ian is a vegatarian, how does he survive on the road being the only one?
NFG: “It's not that easy for Ian sometimes being a vegetarian on the road, but he's used to that. Also, a lot of times there is at least one other person from our crew that's a vegetarian, so Ian's not always the only vegetarian out with us.”
Elyse from Roseville, MI asked:
How do you guys celebrate birthdays on tour? Do your wives/girlfriends/significant others go on tour with you?
NFG: “I think pretty much all of us has had at least one birthday while on tour. Sometimes they're fun, depending on where you are, and who you're on tour with at the time. I remember celebrating my 21st birthday in Denver, CO with Less than Jake...well, I remember most of the night, at least! There are times when we'll have girlfriends/wives on tour with us, but it's usually not for that long. Being on the road isn't as fun for them as it is for us, because we're busy during the day with interviews and then busy at night with the show, so it can be boring for them sometimes. But, it's definitely nice to be able to spend time with a loved one whenever you can when you travel as much as we do.”
Eric S. from Anaheim,CA asked:
Does Steve use custom Jaguars, Tornados, Jazzmaster with EMG's ...which ones do you use?
NFG: “Well, technically I'm not the best person to answer this, but I know some things about guitars so I'll give it a shot. Steve does have Fender Jaguars, Tornados, and Jazzmasters, some with EMG's, but he's also been using Fender Telecasters. Plus, I think he still brings at least one Fender Stratocaster on tour. Chad uses Gibson Les Pauls and ES-335s, and sometimes uses Fender Telecasters I think. Ian uses Fender P-Basses. Hope that covered your question!”
Abby from Irvine, CA asked:
My favorite song is "Sincerely Me". Who is the song about?
NFG: “The song is about writing a letter to somebody you still have feelings for....and hoping they still have feelings for you.”
Jake Bishop from Stoke-on-Trent, England asked:
My fave song is probably "Sonny", where did the inspiration come from?”
NFG: “Unfortunately, the inspiration behind that song was the death of Jordan's grandfather. But, like pretty much all of our songs, it has grown to represent many different people/things, including the passing of Chad's father a few years ago.”
Robert from New York asked:
What is the significance of the title of your new album, Coming Home? Do any songs have special meaing to your hometown of Coral Springs, FL?
NFG: “Coming Home is a great phrase to fully describe this record – most of the songs deal with relationships and the effects of being away from home.”
Amy from Dallas asked:
Do you have any special guest appearances on Coming Home?
NFG: “On a lot of the songs we had an amazing organ/keyboardist named Bemont Tench help us out. He plays in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and he was awesome at the keys! We also had the girls from Eisley sing on some of the tracks...their voices are so good, so soothing...and then as usual, we provided most of the backups, along with our friend and engineer Paul... and our producer Thom has this "voodoo stick" that he used on a few songs.”
Dannielle from Albany, NY asked:
Who are the two main actors in your "It's Not Your Fault" video?
NFG: “The two main actors are Teddy and Heide, two of the people from MTV's "8th and Ocean" series.”
Darren from Tipton, CA asked:
What are some of your biggest influences?
NFG: “Some of my biggest influences (which everybody in our band is different on this one) would be: Green Day and Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, Lagwagon, MxPx, and then also bands like Metallica, Pantera, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and too many other bands to name here.”
Lauren from Arizona asked:
What music are you listening to these days?
NFG: “The stuff I'm listening to now is pretty diverse: Cartel – Chroma, Lamb of God – Sacrement, Hellogoodbye - Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!, Rick Ross - Port of Miami and then, of course, our new record... New Found Glory - Coming Home!”
Mark Norman from Minneapolis asked:
Any chance you would put out an all acoustic or live album?
NFG: “We did release a live DVD two years ago called NFG "Live in London", and we have also recorded and released a few acoustic versions of songs on various albums/websites. As for future plans, don't know of any now, but I would never rule that out...
Davey from Buffalo Grove, Illinois asked:
Is it true that the eifel tower varies by six inches depending upon The weather conditions?
NFG: “I don't know. Is it true that toilets actually flush backwards in Australia?”
Mark Bryan from Kannapolis NC asked:
Did you guys get alot of crap for switching from hardcore to what you do now?
NFG: “We never really ‘switched’ from hardcore. We were influenced by hardcore, but also by punk and emo and metal and a whole bunch of different musical styles. So we never really had anyone say anything about us switching styles. We will always "grow" and "mature" in between albums, and our music will constantly develop, but we've always had the same kind of energy and approach to our music, and since that's not changing, I don't think that many people can really get upset with us.”
Joe from Australia asked:
Do you like Cheese?
NFG: “Only certain types... definitely nothing too strong-smelling. Stuff like Cheddar, American, Provolone, Mozzarella... oh yeah, Ian's favorite...Frumunda Cheese!
