    The Singles Roundup - Feb 16, 2007

    Fri, 16 Feb 2007 12:39:56

Tasty new tunes from The View (pictured), Kanye West, Macy Gray, and more.

Tune into the tracks that have us over the moon this week:

The Knife - "Marble House" (Booka Shade Remix)
What's better than icy Scandinavian synth-pop? How about if you mix it into some icy German techno? This one is an ARTISTdirect premiere, by the way. You're welcome.

Rob Crow - "I Hate You, Rob Crow"
The Pinback singer-guitarist goes solo and releases an early candidate for Song Title of the Year. That off-kilter guitar hook is pretty great, too.

    UGK - "Like That"
They finally freed Pimp C, and it sounds like all that jail time, if anything, just made him rowdier than ever. The beat on this track will, indeed, make you its bitch.

The View - "Wasted Little DJs"
A bunch of lads from Dundee, Scotland make a glorious racket. You almost have to go back to "Louie, Louie" to find a song this catchy with lyrics this unintelligible.

Dr. Dog - "My Old Ways"
Lo-fi indie-pop with a dash of Philly soul. If Brian Wilson had never gotten out of bed, they might have wheeled in an old four-track and gotten him to record something like this.

    The Fratellis - "Chelsea Dagger"
What is it with the Scots and catchy, raucous garage rock? Maybe it's the haggis. This is the other song from the band featured in that ubiquitous new iPod commercial.

Macy Gray - "Finally Made Me Happy"
The rasp is back! And she brought strings and a horn section with her. This sounds like something Roberta Flack could have recorded in 1974—and yes, that's a good thing.

Kanye West, Nas, KRS-One, Rakim, and DJ Premier - "Classic (Better Than I Ever Been DJ Premier Remix)"
Yeah, this track was made to sell shoes (it was commissioned by Nike), but with a lineup this good and a beat this dope, who cares? Just don't kill each other over your Air Force Ones, kids.

Joss Stone - "Tell Me 'Bout It"
Another R&B flashback, courtesy of the world's most soulful English girl. This one's got it all—funky drums, Stax horn stabs, and Joss' voice can still raise goosebumps.

Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - "The Sons of Cain"
A galloping blast of guitars, sweat, and sawdust that sounds like it's trying to save the world—or at least save indie rock from the skinny-pants crowd.

    - Andy Hermann
