The Fall Shuts Down Hammersmith Palais
The iconic London venue Hammersmith Palais, immortalized by the Clash song "(White Man) in Hammersmith Palais," closed for good last night after a performance by Manchester punk legends the Fall. Although the official final show was delivered by the Good, The Bad & The Queen the night before, the Fall's appearance was confirmed before the building was sold for another, to-be-determined use.Despite the fact that it was a historical night as the Palais' final show, the Fall's unpredictable front man Mark E. Smith made no mention of the closing. At one point, a disgruntled fan leapt on-stage and reprimanded Smith for his lack of respect. The band cut their encore short due to the security staff's heavy interference. Before Smith left the stage, he said, "Thank you for allowing us into your security area."
