Playlist: Ricky Sans of Mêlée
Mêlée formed in 1999 in Orange County's thriving pop-punk scene, bringing an emotive, melodic sound that's been compared to Rooney, Death Cab for Cutie, and even Coldplay. With the release of their major label debut, Devils & Angels, they prove once again that people can't get enough music from the OC.One look at this playlist from Mêlée's guitarist/co-songwriter Ricky Sans, and you'll see that this in no ordinary rock band.
1. Guns N Roses - "November Rain" [clip]
This was the first song that ever had a real impact on me as a songwriter. It set the bar high in my mind. It's a perfect combination of melody and lyric, and a surprising progression from a metal band, proving they can hold their own against classic songwriters.
2. Dave Matthews Band - "Crash Into Me" [clip]
The beauty of this song is the stream of consciousness feel to it. Nothing seems over-thought or planned. You just picture Dave hitting record and singing from his heart.
3. The Beach Boys - "God Only Knows" [clip]
Honest and genuine lyrics which are hard to find in pop songs. The melodies and lyrics are flawless. And knowing Brian Wilson was crazy always makes things more interesting.
4. Doves - "Catch the Sun" [clip]
A great mixture of rock and techno vibe. The song keeps its pulse with a beautiful chorus melody on top. Definitely a rock anthem.
5. Prince - "Purple Rain" [clip]
Songs like this are reminders of how there is brilliance and perfection in simplicity, and how Prince was able to accomplish that so well. Not something easy to do.
6. The Fire Theft - "Heaven" [clip]
I can't really explain and dissect this song because it just won't do justice to its greatness. It just sounds like how love feels. That's some amazing songwriting.
7. John Legend - "Ordinary People" [clip]
The first classic song of our generation. He captures the complications of relationships and that sometimes no matter how hard you try, you can only love, do your best, and hope that is accepted.
8. Ben Folds - "Luckiest" [clip]
Another great love song with amazing lyrics that you feel he wrote back in high school to his first love.
9. Jeff Buckley - "I Want Someone Badly" [clip]
I'll be completely honest with this one. It just puts me in the right place usually at the right time, and there's never anything wrong with that.
10. Kelly Clarkson - "Since U Been Gone" [clip]
Honestly, one of the most memorable songs ever. Female empowerment, great lyrics, the catchiest chorus in years. What's not to love?
