The soulful folkie reveals his love of classic rock and barbeque

    Five Questions: Martin Sexton

Folk-soul troubadour Martin Sexton likes doing things his own way. The New England native is releasing his latest album, Seeds, on his own label, Kitchen Table Records, and touring the country in a biodiesel bus. And then there's his music—a stew of roots-rock, folk, R&B, country, gospel, and doo-wop that is wholly his own.

As he criss-crosses the country on his latest tour, Sexton took some time out to answer ARTISTdirect's five questions.

    1. Name a musician who has influenced your sound, but that people may not expect.

    Led Zeppelin.

    2. Who or what inspires you to make music?

    Anything and everything.

    3. Was there a driving concept behind your new album?

I could sit here and make up some cool-sounding explanation—maybe even a politically correct answer—but the truth is there was no preconceived concept for this record. But I think one was born in a very organic, handmade fashion. A concept of honesty and no frills, carrying a subtle message of environmental responsibility.

    4. What's the most exciting part of the actual music-making process for you?

Anticipating the barbeque as the smoke wafts through the cabin windows whilst laying down a backing vocal or lead guitar part.

    5. If you could pick a dream band to open for, past or present, who would it be?

    The Beatles.

Martin Sexton's new album, Seeds, is available now in the ARTISTdirect Store.
