    Notorious MSG (Pt. 3)

    Wed, 29 Aug 2007 13:29:49

The new goofball Asian rap group on ghettos, ancient dance moves and heavy metal

So no chance you'll be joining the duel between 50 Cent and Kanye West when they drop their new albums this September?

Hong Kong Fever: Ya know, it's strange because we don't feel like we fit in anywhere, just how we are as people we are always outcasts. In the music scene we feel likes it's the same thing, people don't really know how to take us. We have a little bit of rock and a little bit of rap elements, but it's not really one world.

Down-Lo Mein: Yeah, [putting] us up against straight ahead rappers like Kanye doesn't really…

Hong Kong Fever: It's not really where we want to be.

How did that mix-up of rap and rock work at your recent shows on the Van's Warp Tour?

Hong Kong Fever: I think we really found our brothas and sistas out there. They really responded to us well, it was a blessing. And we have a guitar player playing with us now, Billie D. Wang, kicking it with the distortion pedal. So we have been compared to AC/DC meets NWA, so kinda keep that as our new direction.

I saw some pretty kickin' dance moves on the clips from there. Who choreographs those?

Hong Kong Fever: Well, ya know, we are not really dancers per se but we like to invent our own moves because we are very innovative like that. We kinda create our own style like the Beijing Blast, I'm not sure if that's what you caught, but it's a move that I learned. It's a centuries old move that I'm bringing to the people. Ya know, helps to get your sex on.

I noticed you play mostly East Coast shows. Is the West Coast going to get a chance to check out these moves anytime soon?

Hong Kong Fever: We plan on doing a West Coast tour. Our next show we are going to play Bowery Ball Room here in NYC September 7, and we got some Florida, Texas possibly, and LA is definitely on the list.

You guys played California a few years back, how was the West Coast's reaction?

Down-Lo Mein: We played Long Beach, ya know, it was a good show. I feel we have come leaps and bounds since then.

Hong Kong Fever: Yeah, we were still a little green. And yellow.

Down-Lo Mein: We've been getting a lot of love from the West Coast. New York is a tough city to play in. We have a lot of fans here but we are feeling a lot of love from the West Coast, they may be more vocal even than the ones out here.

Any chance of an international tour? Taking it back to the East to see how they react?

Hong Kong Fever: It's in the works.

Down-Lo Mein: It's in the cards, but we want to represent in the United States.

Hong Kong Fever: Right now we are going to really break here because it's really where people expect it to happen. It's the most difficult place to break. Ya know? We get ass in Pakistan any day, let me tell you.

Any words of wisdom you guys want to leave us with?

Hong Kong Fever: Don't listen to your parents. Chinatown for life muthabitch.
