New NIN Album Hits the 'Net Overnight
The first post-Interscope project of Nine Inch Nails descended upon the Internet on Sunday night as an extensive collection of instrumental cuts became available through www.nin.comIn a statement, Reznor explained, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective—dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."
Reznor continued to explain the songwriting process, saying all tracks were written and recorded in 10 weeks with "no clear agenda, no overthinking [sic], everything driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as ... something." Helping the NIN mastermind at different junctures were such artists/producers as Alan Moulder, Adrian Belew, and Dresden Dolls drummer/former tour mate Brian Viglione.
"We began improvising and let the music decide the direction," Reznor wrote. "Eyes were closed, hands played instruments and it began. Within a matter of days it became clear we were on to something, and a lot of material began appearing. What we thought could be a five song EP became much more … The end result is a wildly varied body of music that we're able to present to the world in ways the confines of a major record label would never have allowed—from a 100-percent DRM-free, high-quality download, to the most luxurious physical package we've ever created."
About that luxurious package, Ghosts I-IV will be available in three physical formats—the first being a double-disc, six-panel digipak available on pre-order for an April 8 release right now. The other two are a "deluxe edition package" ($75 for a hardcover fabric slipcase, the audio CDs, a DVD with multi-track files for wannabe remixers, and a Blu-Ray disc with high-definition stereo mixes) and an "ultra-deluxe limited edition package" that'll be relegated to 2,500 copies ($300 for everything in the deluxe edition plus a four LP set of exclusive 180-gram vinyl; two exclusive, limited Giclee art prints; and the honor of having Reznor himself sign the damn thing), both of which will ship on May 1.
As one source close to Reznor told Billboard.com last fall, all of this means one simple thing: "Most of the time with a label, they try to squeeze that differentiation out. Now, there's nothing that stops Reznor or Radiohead from doing it uniquely their way. They can do it how it best works for them, without pressure."
