Still no 'Archives' box yet, though

Neil Young Readies Another Long Unreleased LP

While it doesn't have a set release date yet, Neil Young has green-lit the release of Toast, a Crazy Horse-backed disc he scrapped in 2000. According to Young's Web site, www.neilyoung.com, the record was worked on at a San Francisco studio for months, but the band "came up with very little" besides the sporadically-performed "Goin' Home." In fact, some of the songs from the Toast sessions wound up on 2002's Are You Passionate?

"Many songs share a bluesy, jazz-tinged vibe as a common thread," Young's site says of the once-aborted album. "Three solid rockers are interspersed in the mix. Other songs are long with extensive explorations between verses, a Crazy Horse trademark, kind of like a down-played 'Tonight's the Night,' except these songs deal directly with love and loss, not drugs."

To be clear, Toast is apparently the first "special edition" album in a "new series of unreleased albums." Whether this series is linked to Young's long-promised Archives box set is unclear, although Young said in January that Archives Vol. 1 would be out on DVD and Blu-ray formats sometime this year.

Confused? Don't worry; we are too.
