Details about X-Files sequel emerge amid a shroud of mystery
The Truth Is Out There
Alien-chasing FBI agents Mulder and Scully are back! The X-Files: I Want To Believe has been announced as the title of the upcoming sequel to the original, 1997-released The X-Files. The follow-up comes a decade after the release of the original and six years after the wildly popular, cult series about paranormal phenomena ended its successful boob tube run. The film is due in theaters July 25.David Duchovny, who won a Golden Globe last year for his role as a snarky playboy on Showtime's male sudser Californication, will reprise his polar opposite role as Agent Fox Mulder, while icy redhead Gillian Anderson, who has been less visible over the years yet has stayed busy acting in several indie films, will once again step into the sensible shoes of Agent Dana Scully.
X-Files buffs (and there are plenty of those, spending their time arguing about plot strains and theories about the show on messages boards the world over) will recognize the title, as it comes from a poster that was featured hanging on the wall of Mulder and Scully's basement offices in the TV series. The film's plot will address the classic battle between faith and science. Series creator Chris Carter isn't revealing too many details about the film, in typical X-Files fashion. The writer went to great lengths to keep key plot details under wraps. He does indicate the action will not dwell too much on dealings and interactions with extraterrestrials and that it will satiate the diehard fans as well as entice newcomers to the franchise.
We're glad he didn't spoil the the fun, which is following Mulder and Scully while they diligently chase the truth, which is apparently still out there.
