To play a female drug lord
Eva Mendes is the "Queen"
Despite the fact that she just endured a stint in rehab, of which very few details were revealed, Latina actress Eva Mendes has signed on to portray a Mexican woman who becomes a Spanish drug lord and sets out to avenge the murder of her boyfriend in the film, Queen of the South.Josh Hartnett and Ben Kingsley fill out the cast, playing a Marine and a Russian businessman, respectively. The film is adapted from Arturo Perez-Reverte's novel.
While it might seem questionable that Mendes would appear in a drug trafficking drama after her recent personal struggles, we have no doubt that the actress, known for playing gritty roles in films like Training Day and Out of Time, will more than capably handle the tough grrl material.
