Returns to the water with "The Dive"
James Cameron In 3-D
Director James Cameron is known for pushing the boundaries of film and experimenting with the medium, fusing technical, visual flourishes with touching human storylines. Two of the director's triumphs include the visually arresting Terminator 2: Judgement Day and, of course, the box office record shattering, uber-expensive Titanic. The director is returing to the water—obviously fertile creative ground for him—with The Dive. The Dive is a tragic true love story about Cuban free diver Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras and his wife, French diver Audrey Mestre. Ferreras took Mestre under his wing and taught her to become a record-breaking free diver. She broke the female world record by diving 410 feet on a single breath of air, eventually beating her own record by diving 427 feet on a single breath. Free divers hold their breath for long periods of time at deep depths, often without the assistance of a breathing apparatus. Mestre died while competing in 2002, when she attempted a dive deeper than 545 feet and encountered problems with her lift balloon. Her husband was subsequently criticized for pushing her too far and for his "no limits" approach to the sport.
The film will be shot underwater and in 3-D, marrying Cameron's visual aesthetic with an emotional story. Expect a 2010 release.
