Director taking on prison rape, genocide
Uwe Boll to Helm Controversial Flicks
Director Uwe Boll, known for his video game adaptations, will address difficult issues like prison gang rape and genocide in his upcoming projects. The director just lensed Stoic, a shocking true story about three German men who are arrested for nonviolent offenses yet rape and torture a cellmate for half a day before helping him hang himself to cover up their deeds. Edward Furlong, no stranger to uncomfortable fare having appeared in American History X, will portray one of the criminals. The drama features improvised dialogue between the actors and is now in post-production, with Boll planning to shop to distributors in November of this year. An NC-17 rating is also highly possible for the film.
Boll's next effort will be Janjaweed, a film about genocide and torture in Sudan. The film will feature improvised dialogue among the cast and will revolve around American journalists who are torn between leaving to report on the atrocities they've witnessed or staying behind and helping the victims. Boll will shoot the film in South Africa in January.
Given the graphic, highly sensitive nature of the material, it's no surprise that 250,000 people have signed an online petition to halt the making of these films.
