Brokeback The Opera
The Oscar winning tearjerker and cultural lightning rod Brokeback Mountain is being commissioned by the New York City Opera. Charles Wuorinen will compose an opera based on the 2005 film, which was adapted from a beloved short story by Wyoming-based author Annie Proulx. The story of two cowboys who fall in love and embark on a 20-year secret romance was nominated for a slew of Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor, but it only took home three statues. The film struck a chord with gay and straight audiences, making it one of the most successful independent films in history. The opera version of Brokeback would premiere in the Spring 2013 season of the New York City Opera.
