Famed Chicago movie critic Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun Times and Richard Roeper, his co-host since 2000, are leaving At the Movies, the televised review show that Ebert started with the late Gene Siskel.
Ebert revealed his departure via e-mail to the Associated Press, saying that the the show's owners at Diseny/ABC domestic television planned to take it in a new direction and that he will no longer be associated with the program. Contract negotiations between Ebert, who has suffered from thyroid cancer which affected his speech, and the company also broke down. Ebert's last appearance will air the weekend of August 15.
Roeper, who came on board after Siskel passed away from a brain tumor in 1999, has indicated that he will co-host a movie review program similar to the format of At the Movies.
