"Spider-Man" spin-off being developed
Sony May Infect With "Venom"
Sony is developing Venom, a Spider-Man spin-off that focuses on the villain who made his appearance as Spidey's icky, parasitic nemesis in Spider-Man 3. While spin-off movies centered on bad guys are notoriously difficult to promote, word is that Sony is taking a cue from the massive success of The Dark Knight, which owes its popularity in large part to the delightfully sinister portrayal of the Joker by Heath Ledger.Writer Jacob Estes is working on a script draft. While Topher Grace portrayed Venom in Spider-Man 3, there is no guarantee that he will return to the role or that producers will even seek him out for reprisal. Sony also continues to develop the fourth Spidey movie, with a 2011 release date being eyed.
