Stephen Sommers to Direct Tarzan for Warner Brothers
Director Stephen Sommers, who has helmed adventure flicks like Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Van Helsing, and next summer's blockbuster-to-be G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, will direct a remake of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes for Warner Brothers. Summers will write the screenplay with Stuart Beattie, who worked on Collateral as well as G.I. Joe.The project was announced over two years ago, with Guillermo del Toro originally attached to direct, but his full schedule forced him to drop out. Sommers and Beattie will not be updating previous Tarzan-centric films like Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes or the original novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1914. The duo will instead take a new and unique approach to the story.
